Today we officially opened the Stanley Park Community Garden and Native Plant Demonstration Garden. It was a beautiful sunny day; a little bit of a chill in the wind just to show that it was the last full day of summer. Above, Don Buchanan, one of the prime movers of the project, is talking to Jeff Salmon, who worked hard on getting approvals for the garden from the Parks Board and in building community support.
Three parks board commissioners and one former City councillor showed up, but most importantly, the people who had worked so hard to make this a reality - despite opposition from some of the garden's neighbours - turned up. They should take a bow.
We hope this will set an example for what can be done. We took a boring piece of grassland, only used by people walking their dogs, and have turned it into an organic, pesticide-free flower and native plant garden. Parks Board senior staff were there in large numbers - hopefully, they were taking notes.
